In Grabouw, Heart Fm made soup for the locals – on a cold, wet and windy day. We were at the Thusong Centre in Grabouw, where the organisation Early Year Services, and the Theewaterskloof Municipality joined forces with youth organisations in the area to highlight the issues faced by young people in the area.
The initiatives that were focused on geared towards building the future of young minds. We spoke to many organisations including SoulFood Harmony, Glenn Elgin Community Organisation, and a representative from the municipality. These organisations explained, drug and alcohol abuse remain massive challenges in the town. They are working hard on improving the lives of the youth, through after school programs, extra mural activities, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Talks were also held within the Thusong centre to highlight what alcohol abuse during pregnancy can do to ones baby. A very interesting demonstration was held where a raw egg was placed in a glass with a shot of brandy. By the end of the presentation the egg had chrystalised within the glass to highlight what alcohol does to the brain of a baby with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FES). Although shocking, it drove the message home with many kids remarking on the the efficacy of the talk.
Once the talks were done, kids were treated to some hearty soup and were also given SASKO lunchboxes filled with goodies which they took home. Day 15 highlighted the need for proper sexual and substance abuse education within our schooling systems to adequately provide children with the knowledge the need to remain safe within our troubled society.
